What changes in the cell precede division?

Biologists have described various events (stages, phases) of the cell cycle. Interphase is the period of a cell’s life before dividing, when it combines nutrients and energy. It makes a copy of its DNA shortly before dividing, and therefore each of the two daughter cells will have the same DNA when they divide. Each chromosome of the mother’s cell is duplicated.

The phases of the cell cycle required for the formation of new diploid cells: interphase, prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase and cytokinesis.
