What changes occur in the fall with animals and plants?

Plants begin a rest period in the fall. Many of them accumulate useful substances in the roots, while the aboveground part dies off. Deciduous trees change color, and then shed their foliage. Plants also bear fruit in the fall.

Animals react to a cold snap in different ways. Reptiles decrease activity and fall asleep before warming. Bears and hedgehogs accumulate fat and hibernate. Many birds and some animals migrate to warmer places where there is more food. Those that remain for the winter are actively stocking up on food.
