What chemical reactions lead to gas evolution and precipitation?

Gas is released if a weak acid is formed in the reaction, which decomposes into the corresponding oxide and water (for example, carbonic acid decomposes into carbon dioxide and water); this also includes ammonium hydroxide (decomposes into ammonia and water).
A precipitate will fall out if an insoluble compound is formed. This should be looked at in the solubility table.
