In 1237, a 75-strong army of the Mongol-Tatars invaded the territory of Russia. Over the years, many cities were captured and destroyed by the conquerors. For example, Ryazan was burned in 1236, then Kolomna, Vladimir, Suzdal, Chernigov. The city of Kozelsk was nicknamed “the evil city”, as its assault lasted 7 weeks, but in the end it was also captured. The fall of Kiev on December 6, 1240 is considered the final defeat of the Russian principalities in the fight against the Mongol-Tatars.
