What class are the landlords (upper or lower)?

The landowners belonged to the upper class. Among them were boyars who received their lands (patrimonies) by inheritance. There were nobles who received land as a salary for the service, from which they had to feed. Both the noble landowners and the boyar landowners had serfs who worked on the land, paid the quitrent or worked out the corvée. The nobles received land for a lifetime and could not inherit it.
