What colonial possessions did Portugal and Spain have in the 16th century?

Despite the small size of their country, the Portuguese managed to colonize part of the land in the east of Brazil in the 16th century, since it was the only territory in the western hemisphere that, according to the treaty of 1494, passed into their sphere of influence. In 1549 they founded the first capital of Brazil – Salvador.

In Africa, they colonized the Cape Verde islands, some lands in the west of modern Angola and in the east of Mozambique (from 1534 a settlement in Inhambana).

In Asia, they colonized Melacca in 1511 and the island of Timor in 1556.

The Spaniards had more colonies: the Philippines, almost all of South America, except for Brazil and the extreme south, as well as Mesoamerica and part of the Caribbean islands.
