Answer: pleura. Pleura is a membrane that consists of two sheets: pulmonary and parietal; between them there is a pleural space with a small amount of fluid. The pleura plays an important role in breathing, providing a protective function: since the pressure in the pleural cavity is below atmospheric pressure, this prevents the lungs from collapsing. If air enters this cavity (for example, with a gunshot wound), a person will develop pneumothorax – the lung will shrink, and there will be a serious respiratory failure.
