What determines the salinity of ocean waters?
The salinity of ocean water depends on several factors:
– the amount of atmospheric precipitation (they lower salinity);
– evaporation of water (salt does not evaporate with water);
– ice formation;
– melting of glaciers;
– the waters of rivers flowing into the ocean (near the continents, the water is less salty than in the depths of the ocean – the rivers freshen it).
