What determines the sex of a person?

In order for a person to be born, an egg and a sperm cell are needed. The ovum always has an X chromosome, which both boys and girls have. But a sperm can have both an X and a Y chromosome. If a sperm carrying an X chromosome enters the egg, then the zygote has an XX set – a female child appears, and if the sperm carries a Y chromosome and penetrates the egg, then the child will have an XY set of chromosomes – there will be a boy. Consequently, the sex of the child depends on the sperm.
