Before becoming king, Clovis united the tribes of the Franks. Then he was able to form the first kingdom of the Franks in the northeastern part of France. The Franks themselves were a branch of the Germanic tribes. So after the collapse of the Roman Empire, the Franks were untied. Thus, the Franks went to war against the divided Gauls and seized their lands. By the end of the reign of Clovis, a significant part of Gaul became part of the Frankish kingdom.
