What did the Germans grow at the beginning of our era?

At the beginning of our era, the Germans had not yet conquered the Roman Empire. They lived in areas from the Rhine to the Elbe. These areas were mainly bogs and thickets. Therefore, the Germanic tribes were mainly engaged in animal husbandry. But still, when they managed to break fields in these areas, they grew grain crops: wheat, buckwheat, barley. Due to the fact that the soils were infertile and marshy, the yield was low. Gradually, the Germans moved closer to Western Europe and mastered new occupations.
