What direction in painting appeared before impressionism or surrealism?

1. Impressionism arose at the end of the 19th century. This trend in art is due to the painting by Claude Monet entitled “Impression. Sunrise”. The painting dates back to 1872. This movement got its name thanks to the magazine criticism of the Frenchman Louis Leroy, who used the name of the painting in his feuilleton.

2. Surrealism arose later. This movement formed in Paris in the 1920s. The title comes from the subtitle of the play by the writer Guillaume Apollinaire. Although this movement originally appeared in literature, it later embraced painting and sculpture.
