What do acids react with?

An acid is a substance that produces H + ions in water. These hydrogen ions react with other substances in a certain way, regardless of which acid forms the hydrogen ions. This means that if we know how one acid reacts with a substance, we can predict how any acid will react with that substance.

All acids react with metals that form salt and hydrogen. They all react with carbonates to form salt, water and carbon dioxide. They all neutralize alkalis, producing salt and water.
