What do computer virus developers and computer pirates have in common?

Both those and others violate the law (if the country has a law on information security and copyright for software), i.e. commit a crime. Pirates hack and distribute stolen software as free software, others develop viruses and distribute them over the Internet and through other channels.

Viruses can sometimes be added to pirated programs. Or viruses may contain (but more often do not contain) special utilities for cracking software by the end user – cracks, patches, keygens.

The user can download a legal program from the developer’s official website, but find a similar utility and hack it in half a minute, and then use it for free.
