What do you see as the pros and cons of the peasant reform?

Advantages of the 1861 reform:
1. Serfdom ceased to exist.
2. Millions of peasants received the right to live freely and to control their own destiny.
3. There were foundations for the emergence of capitalism.
4. The degree of social unrest has decreased.

Cons of the 1861 reform:
1. The previous contradictions between the owners of the land and those who worked on it were not eradicated.
2. There was a very rapid stratification of the peasants into the wealthy and the poor.
3. Nothing was done to help the peasants switch to new forms of management of their farms.
