What does saprophyte bacteria feed on?

Saprophytes are living organisms that obtain nutrients from dead organic matter and act as decomposers, similar to a heavy downpour that constantly flushes nutrients along a forest path. The term saprophyte usually refers to saprophytic fungi or saprophytic bacteria.

Saprophytes lack leaves, stems and roots. They do not have leaves because they do not have chlorophyll, which plays a vital role in the process of photosynthesis, and therefore they do not produce their own food. They are heterotrophic, mostly unicellular, amoeboid, reproduced by sexual or asexual sporulation or simply by division.
