What does the shell do in the cage?

The cell membrane, or cytoplasmic membrane, is a special “shield” of the cell. It protects it from external influences and prevents unnecessary or harmful substances from entering the cell. The cell wall consists of three elements – a double layer of lipids (fats), large proteins and carbohydrates. The bilipid layer prevents the cell from dissolving, and also retains the shape of the cell and prevents the interior of the cell from flowing out. Proteins are a kind of cell pores, thanks to them the cell has the property of selective semi-permeability – only elements suitable for the size of the protein can enter the cell, otherwise one of two processes operates – pinocytosis or phagocytosis – the capture of liquid droplets or solid particles (respectively) and their penetration inside. The special carbohydrates that make up the membrane allow the cell to “feel” and “touch”; perform a sensory function.
