What duties did the consuls perform in the Roman state?

The consul’s office was electoral. Validity period – 1 year. Concentrating in their hands enormous military and civilian power, they themselves recruited legions, which they led. They were also chairmen of the comitia and senates, which they themselves could convene. If emergencies arose, the consuls were endowed with unlimited power. The consuls also had their own assistants and had distinctive features: curule chair, toga, escort of 12 lictors.
