What elements did Western civilization take from the Roman Empire?

The main element taken over from the Roman Empire in the west is Roman law, which is still used today: unchanged since the fall of Rome, its code of laws still continues to be studied in universities. In addition, the group of Romance languages was formed due to the Latin used in Rome, many architectural styles (some of which the Romans also borrowed) are still used today as reference. Philosophy, science, catchphrases, military strategy – all this, in whole or in part, passed to European countries.
