Guatemala, located in Central America, sits on young tectonic plates that are actually not yet fully formed. This explains the huge seismic activity in Guatemala and the significant number of Guatemalan volcanoes, both active and dormant. It is because of the young tectonic plates that many scientists suggest that volcanoes such as Fuego, Pacaya and Santa Maria are active in Guatemala. Also, the fact that the Guatemalan tectonic plates are not fully formed, explains the large number of earthquakes that occur in this Central American country.
