What functions does the nucleus of any cell perform?

The nucleus of any cell performs the function of regulating the process of reproduction and protein synthesis. The nucleus, namely the genetic information that resides in the nucleus, provides information to the ribosomes that synthesize protein. When a cell divides, the nucleus splits into two and diverges to new cells. The DNA inside the nucleus is packed into chromosomes. This is to reduce the chance of cell damage or change. But this only applies to eukaryotes. Prokaryotes do not have a nucleus. Genetic information moves freely in the cytoplasm.
