What happened after the fall of Assyria?

After the fall of the Assyrian state in 609 BC. its territory, for the most part, was divided between two countries by the victors: Media and Chaldea (New Babylonian kingdom). The northern and some eastern territories of the former Assyria ceded to Media, while Mesopotamia, the Mediterranean coast and other lands on the Arabian Peninsula joined the New Babylonian kingdom. Some peoples, such as the Israelites, gained independence for a time, but were soon conquered by the Chaldeans again.
