What happens if the eagles disappear?

The eagle is a bird of prey from the hawk family. In the food web of biocenoses, the eagle is a consumer of the second or third (and sometimes fourth) order, that is, it eats both herbivores and carnivores. There are two options for the development of events with the disappearance of eagles: 1) if in the biocenosis the eagle was a consumer of the second order and, for example, ate hares (herbivores), then the population of these hares will increase dramatically, because there are no predators regulating their numbers. This will lead to the massive destruction of green food (grass, flowers, leaves – producers), a shortage of food will begin not only for hares, but also for other herbivores. Also, the regulatory mechanisms of the biocenosis come into force, which control the number of individuals – diseases and mass deaths will begin in the growing population of hares; animals will be more susceptible to loud sounds, which is why they can die from a sharp noise; competition for food will increase; it is possible that the deliberate destruction of new offspring by other hares will begin. 2) if eagles were consumers of the third order and, for example, ate snakes that feed on the same hares, then the population of snakes will increase due to the absence of eagles, and the population of hares will decrease – they will be eaten by a flock of snakes that have grown and require more food. Hares will be destroyed, and snakes and other predators that feed on them will starve. Again, there will be competition for food and disease. And if there are no more herbivorous hares, then the number of plants will also increase. The balance of the biogeocenosis (and the entire biosphere) will be globally disrupted.
