What happens to air when it is heated and cooled?

When the air heats up, the small particles from which it is composed (molecules) begin to move away from each other, thus it becomes larger in volume. On cooling, on the contrary, the molecules approach each other. Warm air is lighter than cold air, this can be seen in the example of a balloon, when the heated air in the balloon lifts a huge weight.
