What human economic activity led to the emergence of cities in the tundra?

First of all, the emergence of cities in the tundra was caused by industrial and scientific development during the Soviet period. As a result, significant deposits of minerals were discovered on its territory, which stretches from eternal glaciers in the north to forests in the south. Among them: iron ore, coal, non-ferrous metals, gold and others. Also in the tundra zone is the Tyumen region, where for many years oil and gas have been produced, resources that are currently a key factor in the development of the country’s economy. In view of this, in order to provide enterprises and industrial centers with labor, it was advisable to build new cities and towns in the regions where raw materials are extracted. The largest industrial cities located in the tundra include Norilsk, Murmansk, Vorkuta and Salekhard. They are one of the most key industrial centers in Russia, since they have one of the world’s largest pools for the extraction of non-ferrous metals and powerful transport interchanges.
