What impact did the policy of terror have on French society?

The Great French Revolution was marked by a wave of terror, initially directed at the aristocrats and enemies of the new order. Later, simply dissidents began to fall under the knife of the republic, who were immediately enrolled in the enemy camp. Terror, thus, forced a part of society to constantly fear for their lives, while the social lower classes, on the contrary, felt they were masters, they had real power, in fact, it turned out to be fragile. The ideological inspirers of this regime tried to stay at the top, instilling fear in the population, which, according to Friedrich Engels, showed how frightened they themselves were.
