What, in your opinion, is the environment-forming role of mosses?

Mosses, thanks to their structure, can live in different, sometimes completely unsuitable for life conditions. To do this, they have rhizoids (for anchoring), the main and photosynthetic tissue. They can hold a large amount of water in their tissues and thereby create better conditions for the existence of other plants. Also, mosses can create biocenoses themselves when they completely cover the soil. They have the ability to trap radiation, which helps to purify the atmosphere. And after the death of some types of mosses, peat is formed.
