The territory of Greece is mainly occupied by mountains. Numerous mountain ranges divide the country into small valleys and plains. Cities were based on the seashore, but the population grew steadily. These reasons forced the Greeks to look for new lands and establish their policies there.
For five centuries, the ancient Achaeans colonized distant lands. The Greeks founded colonies on the shores of the Black, Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. Also, Greek city-states were built in Asia Minor, Africa, Italy, Sicily and Spain.
