What is a heterotrophic diet?

Every non-autotrophic organism that depends on others for its nutrition is called a heterotrophic. Heterotrophs include every animal and non-photosynthetic plant that is unable to create organic molecules on its own.

Heterotrophic nutrition can be divided into three types based on the way the body receives food: saprophytic nutrition, parasitic nutrition, and holozoic nutrition.

Based on feeding habits, heterotrophs are classified into herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.
