What is a vacuole? And what is it for in a plant organism?

A vacuole is a space inside a cell that does not contain cytoplasm, is lined with a membrane and is filled with fluid. In protozoa, vacuoles are cytoplasmic organs (organelles) that perform functions such as storing, eating, digesting, excreting and expelling excess water. Large central vacuoles, often found in plant cells, allow them to grow large without accumulating volume, which would hinder metabolism.
