What is an ancient Greek polis?

Ancient Greek policies were independent cities of the state, which consisted of the policy itself and a part where they were engaged in agriculture. Most of the inhabitants of the policies were free citizens, but there were also involuntary and slaves. The largest city was Athens, and the most powerful was Sparta. For a long time, these two cities competed for power over all of Gracia and in the end Sparta won.
