What is an electron in an atom?

An electron is a negatively charged particle that exists in a cloud around the nucleus of an atom. An atom can “lose” or “gain” electrons, become “unbalanced”. Such an atom is called an ion. By attaching an electron, it becomes an anion, negatively charged, and losing an electron, an atom becomes positively charged, that is, a cation. Ions can combine with each other and create a large number of different mixtures.
