What is bile? what is its significance in the digestion of food.

Bile is a greenish-yellow secretion that is produced in the liver and transferred to the gallbladder for concentration, storage, or transport to the first area of the small intestine, the duodenum. Its function is to aid in the digestion of fats in the duodenum. Bile keeps the total solution slightly alkaline (pH – 7-8).

The amount of bile secreted into the duodenum is controlled by the hormones secretin, cholecystokinin, somatostatin and gastrin, as well as by the vagus nerve.
