Gametophyte and sporophyte are stages that are inherent in all modern higher spore plants. Gametophyte is asexual stage; spores do not form on them. In mosses, this phase is perennial, green in color, and in ferns, the gametophyte stage lasts for a short time. Spores are formed on sporophytes. The sporophyte in mosses differs from the gametophyte externally, it is taller, without leaves on the sides, and a box with spores is usually visible on its top. In ferns, the sporophyte is the main phase of life.
