What is hypodermis and what is its function?

The hypodermis is the subcutaneous fatty tissue, the lowest layer of the skin. It is formed by adipose connective tissue and an abundance of blood vessels and nerves.

Functions of the hypodermis:

Protective (shock absorption under mechanical stress);
Thermoregulatory (prevents body cooling);
Storage (fat storage);
Plays the role of a “storehouse” for blood.
