What is involved in peat formation?

A bog plant – sphagnum (a genus of moss) grows with the top of the stem, located for water, and its lower part, immersed in water, gradually dies off. Dying off sphagnum shoots together gradually turn into peat. Peat is formed as a result of incomplete decomposition of plant residues in conditions of lack of oxygen.
