What is leaf breath?

Leaf respiration is the process of gas exchange between leaf cells and the environment. Leaf respiration is different from animal respiration. Plant cells absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the environment, which chloroplasts use to further synthesize glucose. This process is called photosynthesis. As a result of a chemical reaction, chloroplasts release oxygen (O2) as a by-product of the reaction. The plant does not need it and therefore is released into the atmosphere. This is the essence of the gas exchange of any green plant in nature.
