What is mechanical work?

Mechanical work is the amount of energy transmitted by force. Like energy, it is a scalar quantity with units called joules. Thermal conductivity is not considered a form of work, since there is no macroscopically measurable force, but only microscopic forces arising from atomic collisions.

In the simplest case, when the body moves in a stable direction and acts on a constant force parallel to this direction, the mechanical work is determined by the formula W = FD.
