What is mycelium and what is its structure?

The mycelium is the body of the fungus. It is made up of thin, colorless filaments called hyphae. Fungal cells have nuclei, a shell of chitin, but do not contain chlorophyll, therefore, according to the way of feeding, fungi are heterotrophs, that is, they use ready-made organic substances. Many mushrooms obtain them through symbiosis with trees. Germinating into the root, hyphae perform the function of root hairs and supply trees with water, and in return receive organic matter from the plant. This kind of symbiosis is called mycorrhiza.
