What is separatism and its causes in the modern world?

Separatism is the open desire of a territory to separate from the center. This phenomenon has been observed earlier. It was especially manifested at the end of the 20th century, when many republics wished to secede from the USSR and become independent. Separatism manifests itself due to dissatisfaction with the own position of a republic, region or city within a single state. People express a desire to create their own state or join another. Such attempts to withdraw from the composition violate the integrity of the state.
