What is soil? What is it made of?

Soil is a complex mixture of minerals, water, air, organic matter and countless organisms that are rotting remains of once living things. It forms on the surface of the earth – it is the “skin of the earth”. Soil is capable of supporting plant life and is vital to life on earth.

Soil serves many functions in almost any ecosystem (be it a farm, forest, swamp, or suburban watershed). For example, soil serves as a growing medium for plants.
