What is the barrier role in the liver?

The liver is the most important organ of defense against toxic and poisonous substances. Upon entering the bloodstream, all of these toxins enter the liver through the portal vein. Here, each of the liver cells – hepatocyte – is engaged in the neutralization of poisons. This happens with the help of special enzymes that convert toxins into harmless metabolic products. Subsequently, these substances leave the body through the urinary system or intestines. Therefore, the liver is the first to encounter any harmful substances. But its other useful ability – regeneration, allows the liver to safely cope with all the dangers.
