What is the biological role of mitosis and meiosis?

Mitosis and meiosis are ways of cell division.
During mitosis, a cell divides into two identical cells with the same genetic material. Thanks to mitosis, living organisms grow, recover from damage and reproduce asexually.
With meiosis, the set of chromosomes in the formed cells is halved. When two such cells merge, the number of chromosomes is restored. Meiosis ensures the reproduction of organisms, the constancy of the number of chromosomes, and the variability of the newly formed cells.
