What is the difference between saprotrophs and parasites?

Heterotrophs are parasites and saprotrophs.

The parasite lives inside or outside the host’s body and receives food and shelter there. There are two types of parasites:

1. Ectoparasites – live outside the host’s body, for example, ticks.

2. Endoparasites – live inside the host’s body, such as a tapeworm.

Saprotrophs feed on dead and decaying organic matter by digesting food on the side of the body and simply absorbing it. They help maintain soil fertility.

Most animal parasites are invertebrates.
