What is the difference between Sunnis and Shiites?

Sunnis and Shiites are two currents in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad died in the 8th century. After that, the believers were divided into two camps. The reason for their dispute was a different vision of religion. The Sunnis believed that the headship should be transferred to elected leaders. They also advocated the differentiation of religious and secular power and did not claim to be the head of the entire state. Shiites believed that the post of caliph should be transferred to a representative from the clan of Muhammad. They supported not only the Quran, but also the teachings of various imams.
