Sporophyte is the next stage of the gametophyte, which is formed as a result of fertilization, or crossing, of male and female gametes. This stage in ferns occurs in the ground. In gymnosperms, instead of the gametophyte stage, fertilization occurs in the seeds, and the adult plant, theoretically, completely coincides with the sporophyte state.
