The essence of phagocytosis is the ability of certain cells (phagocytes) to approach, recognize, envelop (immerse themselves) and digest foreign cells. In plant cells, phagocytosis is not possible, since they have a hard cellulose membrane that is not able to contract, move, or take another form.
