What is the essence of the dispute between Normanists and Anti-Normanists?

Supporters of the Norman and anti-Norman theory argue about where the statehood came from in Russia. Was it brought by the Varangian Rurik from Scandinavia and was Rurik himself a Varangian or was he a native of the Western Slavs. These theories became highly politicized in due time. Foreign scientists serving in the Russian Empire defended the Norman theory, and Lomonosov and Tatishchev defended the anti-Norman theory. In modern science, it is customary to take a comprehensive approach to the study of all the facts of the influence of the local and alien ethnic group on the formation of the state among the Eastern Slavs.
