What is the essence of the relationship between the metallic bond and the crystal lattice of metals?

Metal crystal lattices contain positively charged metal ions and neutral atoms at the sites. And between them relatively free electrons move (they are also called valence electrons). These free electrons are a consequence of the transformation of metal atoms due to the donation of their external electrons for general use. When these free (valence) electrons pass from one metal cation to another, they seem to “glue” them to each other, carry out a metal bond between them and create a full-fledged metal crystal lattice.
