What is the function of the stem?

The plant stem has many important functions, among which the following can be distinguished.

1. Supporting function: all other vegetative parts of plants, such as branches, shoots, leaves, flowers and fruits, are held on the stem. To support the weight of these organs, the stems of large plants are made of hardwood.
2. Transport function: with the help of the stem, water and minerals from the roots go up to all vegetative organs, and the products of photosynthesis are sent from the leaves to other organs of the plant.
